What is placenta encapsulation?
The process of turning your steamed, dehydrated, and ground placenta into pill form. Taken in the days following birth, it is believed to have numerous health and general well being benefits. I use the Traditional Chinese Method to prepare the placenta, gently steaming it over a bed of lemon slices and fresh ginger, which is said to encourage warmth and healing in the body.
What are the benefits of placenta encapsulation?
We are still learning about the benefits of placenta consumption. In many traditions the placenta is revered as sacred. As of right now, there haven't been any comprehensive studies done, so the evidence we have is anecdotal. Women have experienced various benefits from placenta capsules, some reported include: help balancing hormones, increase in energy, mood balance, increase in milk production, decrease in devlopment of baby blues, assistance in returning uterus to pre-pregnancy state.
Is it safe?
There are no known risks attached to consuming one's own placenta. Your placenta is safe to consume even if you have a c-section, epidural, pitocin, or certain medical complications such as premature birth or preeclampsia. I take great precautions during prepartion to follow strict sanitation guidlines. The FDA has not yet regulated placenta encapsulation and capsules.
